Fisheries
Our work within the fisheries industry is both varied and extensive. We have been a part of everything from planning and implementing a research station-wide corporate GIS, to analyzing 3D data. CRMLTD has the assets in place to process the high volume of data that accompanies fisheries-related activities.
Some of our Fisheries clients include:
Training, Department of Fisheries & Ocean (DFO) - Instructor-led courses on Introduction to GIS I and II, taught at the Vancouver Island University Campus. Course was designed to offer the basics of GIS theory, accompanied with practical exercises. The final lab is tailored specifically for the DFO staff.
Planning & Implementation, DFO – Plan, Implement a corporate GIS at a Research Station. Work included liaising with the software provider and technical team to acquire the appropriate level of licensing for installation. On-The-Job Training on GIS Server administration tasks was provided, and technical documentation delivered. Conducted research and development into a feasible marine data model as a standardized GIS format.
Custom Application, British Columbia Marine Conservation Analysis (BCMCA) – Our technical design team developed an application in the ArcGIS environment that will produce grid datasets of indices of biomass by species, in support of the BCMCA Marxan decision tool development. After an end-user survey was conducted, the application was deemed to require a user-friendly interface that would automate many of the user-selectable variables. This application became a module that installs into the ArcGIS and will automate the processing of data with Spatial Analyst to create a series of resultant data that displays the density of the data in a raster grid. The secondary objective was to ensure compatibility and portability within other sections of the Research group.
Mapping Analyses & Cartography, BCMCA – Our mapping and analyses team, performed high-level analyses, processing, and published the resultant spatial data into commercial-grade reports. We created and standardized templates for use by the Federal government in their documentation for the BCMCA.
Standardization, Mill & Timber Products - Conversion of existing mapping and data for Fish and Watershed features into the BC Fisheries, RISC standards for Fish and Fish Habitat Maps. Spatial and Tabular data was edited to match existing TRIMII data. In addition, SQL and VB scripts were written to accommodate the detailed labeling required for the standardized mapping. Other tasks included creating specialized custom fonts and symbol sets required to meet the standards.
Public Notice Mapping, DFO - Updated existing 2008 Public Notice Maps to 2009 as directed by DFPO staff. Generate the new 2009 Fraser River Public Notice Maps. Initiate recreational fishery businesses location mapping.
Video Miner, DFO - An application for marine biologists to view and catalogue species information from digital video captured in ocean dives. This application enables biologists to enter and query the database based on any species attributes, and view it on the digital movie files using the timestamp as reference.
